Certificate in Counselling

THE CERTIFICATE IN COUNSELLING IS A  10 MONTH PART-TIME CERTIFICATE PROGRAM BY AL-MISBAH ACADEMY IN COLLABORATION WITH INTERNATIONAL ISLAMIC COLLAGE MALAYSIA.

Many amongst us may require help to seek the support of counselling at some point in our lives. To learn and explore the essential skills of counselling will equip oneself from rendering assistance to those who are in need during their challenging times. Al-Misbah Academy in collaboration with International Islamic University Malaysia presents Certificate in Counselling Studies. It aims to bridge the foundational qualities to strengthen and appreciate both worlds in one course.

- Must be 25 years old or older

 

- Minimum of GCE ‘A’ Level or Diploma with ‘O’ Level pass in English Language as a first language

- At least three years of working experience in the human services or educational setting, in nursing, para-counselling, assistant social work and work within helping voluntary organisations

Additional Entrance Requirement:

Submission of an essay of 200 words explaining why they would want to pursue a counselling programme and what they intend to do with the qualification attained.

Course Commencing:

Objective

  • The course aims to equip students with counselling skills and enables them to provide social, emotional, spiritual and psychological support for the well-being of people in diverse communities.

Assessment Criteria

A student’s aptitude is tested throughout the year in a series of assessments and assignments designed to prepare the students for their final examination at the end of the module. The outcome of these examinations will form the substance of the certification.

Course Structure

The programme is delivered through a series of lectures of modules. It consists of ten core modules. There are two components to the programme, which comprises of theory and practical. These include Group supervision, Individual Supervision, Personal Counselling, Related Counselling Activities Counselling, and a Personal Journal

Students will have the opportunity to apply their studies through peer interaction.

​Module 1 - Introduction to Counselling (9 hours)

  • What is counselling

  • The myths around counselling

  • The benefits of counselling

  •  The counselling relationship

 

Module 2 - Counsellor Personhood in Counselling Process (9 hours)

  •  The qualities & characteristics of a counsellor

  •  Islamic counselling and role of Muslim counsellor

 

Module 3 - Counselling theories: diversity and convergence (9 hours)

 

  •  Classification of counselling theories

  • What is the Islamic worldview of self

  •  Islamic counselling practices and theories

  • Integrative versus “purist” approach in counselling

Module 4 – Communication Skills (9 hours)

  •  Importance of good communication skills

  •  Barriers to effective communication

  •  Verbal and Non-Verbal communication

  • Active listening

Module 5 – Counselling Process (9 hours)

  •  The Skilled-Helper

  • Model of Human Psyche

 

Module 6 – Sustenance of Psychological Health (9 hours)

  •  The spectrum of psychology health

  • The common affects affecting psychology health (anger, fear, sadness)

 

Module 7 – Social Services in Singapore (9 hours)

  •  Working with different age group (children, youth, adult, elderly)

  • Working with family

  • Working with community

Module 8 – Boundaries and Confidentiality (9 hours)

  • The counselling ethics and the law

  • The importance of boundaries in counselling

  • Maintaining boundaries: the challenges

  • Understand confidentiality

Module 9 – Documentations in Counselling (9 hours)

  •  Documenting counselling session

  • The importance documentation in counselling

  •  Writing counselling notes (SOAP format)

Module 10 – Managing Closure in counselling (9 hours)

  •  Reasons for counselling relationships coming to an end

  • Why managing closure is important in counselling

  • Positive closure in counselling

Ms Maryati - Master of Social Science (Counselling)

Ustazah Noraini - Master in Counselling, and currently pursuing her Doctorate in Philosophy (Psychology)

Qualification

The Certificate in Counselling is a part-time programme and is awarded upon satisfactory completion of all modules at Al-Misbah Academy.

A student’s aptitude is tested throughout the year in a series of assessments and assignments designed to prepare the students for their final examination at the end of the module. The outcome of these examinations will form the substance of the certification.

Students who decide to exit the Certificate of Islamic Counselling Programme at the end of this stage will not be issued any certification nor transcript.
